Cyber Security is one of the important aspects of every country. That is why the government is implementing a cybersecurity law to protect its citizens. 

One of the countries that have cybersecurity laws is the Philippines. So how important is a cybersecurity law in the Philippines?

And why is it important? Let us discuss a little more on cybersecurity law Philippines.

What is Cybersecurity Law?

Cybersecurity law refers to a set of laws that protect digital information from hackers. It is a type of IT law. 

This law protects computer systems from cyber attacks. Also, theft or leakage of confidential information. 

It also gives the government the right to regulate the internet and its use. This law is implemented by the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.

Types Of Cybersecurity Laws

There are different types of cybersecurity laws on how to protect their citizens from cyberattacks. They are in the following:

Computer Misuse Act of 1990: 

This was a British law that was implemented in Australia and New Zealand. The law was named after the section of the criminal code of the United Kingdom of Great Britain.

And Northern Ireland where it was contained under. It defined unauthorized access of computers as a computer crime. 

In the Philippines, this law was amended by RA 10175 or the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012. That added some provisions on new crimes such as the following:

  • illegal access
  • illegal interception 
  • data interference
  • system interference
  • cybersex
  • online defamation

Computer Security Act of 2012: 

This law regulates all information security systems used in government offices. And government-owned corporations. 

It requires all government agencies to protect their confidential information. In their computers and networks against hacking and unauthorized access. 

Data Privacy Act: 

This act protects personal data stored on any kind of device. It includes mobile phones, laptops, etc. 

The act requires that personal information to on any device. That should against unauthorized access by using authentication tools like passwords, biometrics, etc. 

Data Protection Agency Bill:

This bill will create an independent agency that will be responsible for protecting data privacy. It is for individuals and businesses alike under the following: 

  • Republic Act 10173 
  • Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012
  • RA 9367 or Data Privacy Act

Furthermore, any other legislation regarding data privacy protection in the future. 

Data Privacy Enforcement Commissions (DPEC):

This commission will be responsible for hearing data privacy violations cases. It includes violations under RA 10173 or the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.

And RA 9367 or Data Privacy Act or any other legislation. 

Data Privacy Court:

This is a special court that hears cases on data privacy violations. It is by the proposed Data Privacy Act. 

This court will be under the Office of the President of the Philippines. It will have special judges who are experts in cybersecurity law.
